Washington had a huge surprise for its kicker after his late-game heroics on Saturday.

Grady Gross nailed a 42-yard field goal to give the Huskies a 24-21 win in the Apple Cup over the Washington State Cougars. After the game, coach Kalen DeBoer brought his kicker into the middle of the locker room and announced that Gross had been put on scholarship.

“I’m thankful for Grady Gross,” DeBoer exclaimed. “And you know what I hope Grady Gross is thankful for? The scholarship he’s earned.”

DeBoer and Gross were then swarmed by teammates and staff in celebration.

Gross went 1-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points. The kicker made the 42-yard game-winning kick to keep the Huskies perfect on the season.

The sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., was perfect on extra points this season, nailing all 54 of his attempts. He also went 11-for-14 on field goal attempts, with none bigger than Saturday’s game-winner.

The Huskies have now won 9 of their last 10 matchups with the Cougars. They’ll take their perfect 12-0 record and a 19-game winning streak into the Pac-12 Championship Game to face the 11-1 Oregon Ducks.

The Huskies defeated the Ducks in an instant classic back in October, 36-33. The rematch for the Pac-12 title will take place on Friday, Dec. 1 in Las Vegas.
