Kalen DeBoer was linked to the vacant Texas A&M coaching job on Sunday, but when he met with reporters for his weekly news conference on Monday, he shared that new UW athletic director Troy Dannen is already working with him to keep both DeBoer and his staff in place long-term.

A&M fired Jimbo Fisher on Monday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported shortly after that DeBoer could be on the shortlist of candidates for the Aggies to target. DeBoer got a two-year contract extension this time last year, and it sounds like another could be in the cards.

UW is 10-0 for the first time since 1991. On Saturday, it’ll play No. 10 Oregon State on the road.

“My focus is 100% on us playing ball right now,” DeBoer said when asked about the coaching carousel spinning up and a potential extension.

“When it comes to a contract piece, things like that, I’ll just make sure it’s known that Troy (Dannen) has done a great job of approaching me and working together to try to make sure the continuity exists here at UW,” he said. “That doesn’t just happen overnight, but those efforts are certainly being made and I’m appreciative of that.”

DeBoer won his 100th career game as a head coach last Saturday. To begin his Washington tenure, he’s 21-2. It’s looking like a slam-dunk hire for UW.

The “continuity” piece DeBoer hinted at is a big one. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb turned down interest from Alabama last offseason. As UW continues to win, DeBoer’s staff will be picked over.

With Washington moving to the Big Ten next year and an influx of revenue expected, having the ability to pay top dollar to not just DeBoer but also his staff will be important.

DeBoer was asked Monday if he sees himself at Washington long-term. His daughter, Alexis, committed to play softball at Washington beginning next season. He says the family is happy where they are.

“Yeah, this is a great place,” DeBoer said. “My family loves it here. There’s a lot of other reasons, too. There’s just a lot of things I love about this place. This is a championship football program. I’ve said it from Day 1. It’s got the bones of championships. Love the way we’ve been accepted into this place. It’s a great place to coach.

“Like I said earlier, Troy’s trying to do everything he can to help myself and the staff continue this journey we’re on.”
