One incredible call for all the marbles.

Washington pulled off a remarkable fourth-and-1 conversion with 1 minute, 11 seconds left to extend their game-winning drive, capped off by a Grady Gross field goal from 42 yards out as time expired to preserve an undefeated season with a 24-21 Apple Cup win.

The call itself was legendary: An option reverse pitch to Rome Odunze that gained 23 yards and kept the Huskies’ dream alive. That followed a huge third-and-1 stop by Washington State that reason would dictate would be followed by a penalty.

But Washington hasn’t gotten this far by playing it safe.

“There’s options on it and Michael’s got a few of them; he chose the right one,” Kalen DeBoer said after the game. “Got the look we wanted, and let’s get it to our best player, Rome Odunze, and let him go.”

That was one big drive and one big play, but here are 3 other takeaways from what was one incredible Apple Cup…

Michael Penix Jr. picks a bad time to slow down

With Caleb Williams falling off his Heisman perch midway through the year, his Pac-12 running mate Michael Penix Jr. was right there to pick up the mantle.

Penix looked like he would run away with the thing until the last few weeks, but things particularly took a turn in the final 2 games of the regular season.

Last week in a narrow win over Oregon State, Penix had just 162 yards, a season low. Against the Cougars, he was errant on several passes and finished with 204 yards on 18-of-33 passing.

He was great on the final drive, though.

Huskies get Jalen McMillan back full-go, but Ja’Lynn Polk disappears

With one-third of their star trio, McMillan, sidelined for much of the season, it was on Odunze and Polk to step up, and they have.

But on Saturday, with McMillan seeing his most action in weeks, Polk took a back seat. His lack of production was shocking, as was a key fourth-quarter drop.

It’s not like McMillan monopolized the ball, either. He had just 5 grabs for 26 yards.

Weird disappearing act for Polk.

Dillon Johnson’s limitations hurt the Huskies

Before the play of the game could have been the stop of the season.

On third-and-1 with less than 2 minutes left and the score tied at 21 — Washington State came up huge. Defensive lineman Nusi Malani split a double team and stopped Johnson dead in his tracks.

Given Johnson’s struggles to say healthy on Saturday, it’s a bit of a surprise Washington went with him there. He battled foot injuries all game, finishing with 82 yards on 21 carries
