UCLA will open a new era on offense next season. It’ll be the first time since Chip Kelly took over the program that Dorian Thompson-Robinson will not be part of the quarterback room.

Kelly and the Bruins are expected to bring in someone new this offseason to compete for the starting job in 2023. Buzz in recent days has picked up that 5-star 2023 quarterback Dante Moore could flip his commitment from Oregon to UCLA. Reports on Friday suggest that, if he does, he won’t be the only quarterback add the Bruins make.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, former Kent State quarterback Collin Schlee is expected to transfer to UCLA.

Schlee, a junior who entered the transfer portal on Dec. 6, threw for 2,109 yards and 13 touchdowns this season while rushing for 492 yards and five touchdowns. The 2022 season was a breakout one for Schlee, who had attempted 36 passes over his first two seasons at Kent State.

He’ll have two years to work with at UCLA.

Schlee’s best stretch of the season came in early October. In a 31-24 win over Ohio on Oct. 1, he completed 24 of his 37 passes for 398 yards and a score while adding another 77 yards and a rushing score on the ground. One week later, in a 27-24 loss to Miami (OH), Schlee threw for 306 yards and three scores.

He was one of several former Kent State starters who announced their departure after head coach Sean Lewis left the school to accept the offensive coordinator position at Colorado.

UCLA’s quarterback room can get interesting in a hurry. The Bruins could bring back Justyn Martin, a 4-star signee from the 2022 class, and a would-be fourth-year man in Ethan Garbers. UCLA also currently holds a verbal pledge from 3-star Orinda (Calif.) Miramonte quarterback Luke Duncan. It’s unclear how a potential commitment from Moore would change the dynamic in the room.

If Duncan signs and Moore flips, UCLA could take as many as five scholarship quarterbacks into the new season.
