Washington reportedly completes hiring of prominent NFL assistant to be DC
Washington has been zeroed in on a key defensive coordinator candidate for Jedd Fisch’s staff. According to Monday morning reports, the Huskies have reached an agreement with a prominent NFL assistant to fill that role.
NFL insider Field Yates is reporting that Steve Belichick has accepted the DC position at Washington after 12 years in the NFL. Belichick is indeed the son of legendary New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. The elder Belichick parted ways with the Patriots at the end of New England’s season, and now Steve is looking to head to the college ranks as a coordinator.
Since joining the Patriots in 2012, Belichick held a number of roles. Most recently, he served as the outside linebackers coach since 2020 and has served as the defensive play-caller for 5 seasons.
Patriots OLB coach Steve Belichick has now accepted the position to become the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator.
After 12 seasons coaching in the NFL with the Patriots, he heads to the college ranks in a coordinator capacity.
Belichick called defensive plays…

Landing an assistant of Belichick’s stature with playcalling experience is a big win for Fisch’s initial staff in Washington. While the Huskies delivered some elite results under Kalen DeBoer, the defense was never an area that impressed after finishing 56th in points allowed during the 2023 season and 58th in 2022.
We’ll see if Belichick can help turn things around, especially as the Huskies try to reload under Fisch and make the jump to the Big Ten in 2024.
