Rick Neuheisel is not a fan of how Michigan landed in the No. 1 spot for the final College Football Playoff field instead of Washington. Both programs finished the season with perfect 13-0 records and a Power 5 title.

During an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show, Neuheisel went on to say Washington stands out after winning a better conference and beating Oregon twice.

“I think Washington should be the No. 1 team, Dan. I mean Washington was in the better conference this year, the Pac-12 is a better conference,” Neuheisel claimed. “They beat Oregon twice. Michigan has the Ohio State victory, who’s already jettisoned its QB.”

Neuheisel did not stop there, going on to shred Michigan’s body of work by rattling off the type of dreadful offenses the Wolverines faced this season. Overall, 7 of Michigan’s wins came against an offense that ranked 101st or worse in the country per Neuheisel’s analysis.

“Michigan’s victories are — Iowa was 133rd in offense. Michigan State was 128th in offense, Minnesota was 125th, Rutgers was 123rd, Nebraska was 118, Indiana was 101st, East Carolina was 130th and Bowling Green was 105th,” outlined Neuheisel. “That’s their schedule, and they had 1.9 yards per carry against Iowa, less than 5 yards an attempt against Iowa. Washington should be 1.”

Later on in the interview, Neuheisel said there is only one metric Michigan can point to as evidence of a stronger résumé, and that’s game control for the way Michigan beat lesser opponents.

“The only metric that can say Washington is behind Michigan is game control,” said Neuheisel. “Michigan pounded lesser opponents, and I just went through that résumé list.”

We’ll see how it all plays out in the CFP, especially with Jim Harbaugh and Michigan drawing a semifinal matchup against Nick Saban and Alabama.
