Kalen DeBoer said the fourth-down run from Rome Odunze with 1:11 to play in Saturday’s Apple Cup was an option.

Washington executed a fake halfback dive play on fourth-and-1 from its own 29-yard-line. Everyone thought Dillon Johnson had the ball up the gut. Instead of handing it off, Michael Penix Jr. turned around and flipped it to Odunze as he was coming across the back of the formation.

The play resulted in 23 yards and a fresh set of downs. It eventually led to a walk-off field goal from Grady Gross to give Washington a 24-21 win and a 12-0 regular season.

“There’s options on it. Michael’s got a few of them,” DeBoer told the FOX broadcast. “He chose the right one, got the look we wanted. Let’s get it to our best player, Rome Odunze, and let him go.”

Odunze was outstanding all day for Washington. He hauled in seven receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns as well.

DeBoer tipped his cap to Washington State. He said the game wasn’t easy. But UW just continues to find ways to win these kinds of games.

“They just hung together,” DeBoer said. “It’s as tight a group as I’ve ever been around. They’ll play for each other, they’ll play til the very end. It’s one of the most unselfish teams I’ve ever had.”
