Greg McElroy had a front-row seat to a dominant performance by Michael Penix Jr. in Monday’s Sugar Bowl.

The Washington quarterback was sensational, going 29-of-38 for 430 yards and 2 touchdowns versus 0 interceptions. His 430 yards were the 2nd-most in a College Football Playoff semifinal game, with Joe Burrow’s 493 yards in 2019 topping the list. For further perspective, Texas, as a team, had 498 yards of total offense. Two of Washington’s receivers broke the 100-yard mark: Rome Odunze (125) and Ja’Lynn Polk (122).

Time and time again, Penix delivered throws into tight windows, which impressed McElroy throughout the game.

“Michael Penix is unbelievable, guys,” McElroy said on the Always College Football podcast. “It was remarkable the way he was able to layer passes, get it up and over defenders, and get it up and down the field, and his receivers are just outstanding.”

Penix and the Huskies now head to Houston to face Michigan, with Washington seeking its first national championship since 1991.
