Softballs were flying out of the park on Saturday for Utah. The Utes tied up the series with San Diego State and will live to see another day after winning 10-1.

Utah came out of the gate smashing home runs. Ellessa Bonstrom crushed a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Utes a 2-0 lead. Bonstrom knew it was gone when it left her bat as it the ball went to right field.

Shelbi Ortiz kept the scoring going for Utah in the next inning with a one-RBI double. Ortiz’s hit allowed Haley Denning to score all the way from first base. Utah headed into the third inning up 3-1 after Ortiz’s efforts.

The crushing blow came from Utah in the fourth inning. Julia Jimenez demolished a pitch with the bases loaded for a grand slam to increase the lead to 7-1. The clip of the blast speaks for itself.

Utah continued piling on with a three-run homer from Ortiz in the fifth inning. That would the last scoring play from Utah for the remainder of the game.

Mariah Lopez put on a show on the mound. She allowed 4 hits and 1 earned run in four innings of work. Lopez also struck out a pair of San Diego State batters. Sarah Ladd closed the game in the fifth inning, allowing just 1 hit.

Utah can punch its ticket to Oklahoma City with a win on Sunday. The teams that will be in Oklahoma City so far are Oklahoma, Tennessee, Stanford, Florida State, and Oklahoma State.

The series finale between the Utes and Aztecs will be on ESPN+ on Sunday. The start time for the game has not been announced yet.
