Utah adds PWO linebacker to 2023 class after decorated California prep career
Utah added to its walk-on class Sunday with a PWO commitment from Atherton (Calif.) Sacred Heart Prep linebacker Shay O’Kelly.
Kelly is a 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker. He was a first-team selection at linebacker for the Bay Area News Group’s all-state team. He also earned All-Metro honors from the San Francisco Chronicle and a second-team spot on the MaxPreps California All-State team.
As a senior, he was the defensive player and linebacker of the year in the PAL/SCVAL Bay Division. He was the leader of a defense that allowed seven points or less in seven of his team’s 11 games.
In 26 games over O’Kelly’s final two varsity seasons, he totaled 326 tackles. He had 191 tackles as a junior, then produced 18 tackles for loss as a senior. He also had six sacks in his career, five pass breakups, four fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles.
Utah linebacker coach Colton Swan should have a strong room in 2023. O’Kelly will look to make his mark.
