Former Utah wide receiver Mikey Matthews has committed to Cal.

The 5-foot-8 Irvine product spent one season with the Utes, where he appeared in 12 games with six starts. He lands at Cal with four years to play three for the Golden Bears.

Matthews made 29 receptions for 261 yards in his freshman season and served as the Utes’ primary return man on the kick return and punt return teams.

Baylor and Arizona were also interested in Matthews, who was a 4-star recruit out of Mission Viejo in California. Curiously, Cal did not offer Matthews initially, but with another new offensive coordinator taking over in Berkeley, Matthews has a chance to step into a featured role in the slot right away.

With Devaughn Vele entering the NFL Draft, Utah is in the market for a new WR1 next season. Expect the Utes to be active in the portal now and in the spring to try and land some help at the position. Mycah Pittman is returning next season, and Money Parks should also be back, but there’s work to be done.
