Bronny James update: Family releases statement on cardiac arrest, basketball future
Bronny James is expected to make a “full recovery” after suffering a cardiac event during a workout earlier this summer.
The James family released a statement on James’ condition on Friday afternoon. According to the release, the “probable cause” of James’ sudden cardiac is a congenital heard defect. Per the release, this is a treatable condition.
Looking forward, the family is optimistic about a full recovery:
“We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future. We will continue to provide updates to media and respectfully reiterate the family’s request for privacy.”
The “probable cause” of Bronny James’ sudden cardiac arrest was an “anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect,” per a James Family spokesperson. They remain confident Bronny can return to basketball in the “very near future.”

It remains unclear if James will be medically cleared to play for USC during the 2023-24 season.
Entering this offseason, James was viewed as one of the top freshman guards in the country. If he is able to play for the Trojans this season, James could be a 1st round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
