UCLA lands commitment from blue-chip Mater Dei linebacker
On Friday, UCLA earned its second commitment for the 2023 class in as many days.
Tre Edwards, a 4-star linebacker from Mater Dei (Calif.) announced his commitment to the Bruins. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker just took an official visit to UCLA this past weekend and evidently liked what he saw. He chose the Bruins over a group of finalists that also included Oregon, Cal, and Arizona.

Edwards ranks as the 195th overall player in the 2023 class, per the 247 Composite. He’s the 12th-ranked linebacker and the 14th-ranked prospect from the state of California. He was named a MaxPreps Freshman All-American in 2019 after recording 103 tackles in 10 games. As a junior last year, he had 96 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and six sacks. He’s a violent hitter, wrapping up and tackling through the ball carrier.
He’s the fourth known commit for the Bruins in the Class of 2023. Tailback Roderick Robinson committed to UCLA on Thursday, joining safety Ty Lee and wideout Grant Gray.
247Sports’ Brandon Huffman had this to say about Edwards’ game:
“Edwards is a stout run stopper, able to fire through gaps and stop the running back in the backfield. Can bring the heat to a quarterback too. Shows plus instincts and athleticism. Physical backer, a sure tackler who will end plays on first contact. Solid in pass coverage and can move fluidly in space. A three-down backer with his ability to make plays against the run and the pass.”
