The Big Ten has confirmed the full regular season and Big Ten Tournament formats for basketball seasons moving forward.

This summer, the league will officially expand to 18 teams with the arrival of Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA from the Pac-12. As a result, the Big Ten Tournament in both men’s and women’s basketball will expand to 15 teams.

Current installments of the Big Ten Tournament consisted of all 14 teams in the conference, but the bottom 3 teams in the standings will no longer automatically qualify for the conference tournament. Doing so will allow the tournament to be played across the current 5-day schedule and maintain a double bye for the first four teams in the standings. Teams that finish 5-9 in the conference will receive a single bye.

As for the regular-season schedules, men’s teams will maintain a 20-game slate and the women’s teams will continue an 18-game slate in conference play. Per the Big Ten, that allows “for non-conference scheduling flexibility, is consistent with peer schedule formats and maximizes opportunities for NCAA postseason berths.”

Big Ten games played on a single-play basis will continue to alternate home and away locations annually. Two-play opponents will be determined “with consideration for competitive balance, geography and rivalries.”
