Stanford has scheduled a home-and-home nonconference series with Fresno State that will begin in 2028.

The schools announced the news on Tuesday. The Cardinal will head out to the Central Valley on Sept. 2, 2028, to take on the Bulldogs inside Valley Children’s Stadium before Fresno State returns to The Farm on Sept. 1, 2029, for a battle inside Stanford Stadium.

Stanford will be playing Fresno State for the first time in 100 years when the two take the field in 2028. They played in consecutive years from 1926-28, with Stanford winning all three meetings by a combined 135-7.

After this year, the Cardinal will head to the ACC to begin life in a new conference for the first time since the 60s. How the Cardinal chooses to schedule in the nonconference could drastically change as a member of the ACC.

Stanford’s 2024 nonconference currently includes TCU, Cal Poly, and Notre Dame (on the road). Unlike the Pac-12, the ACC has played an eight-game league schedule for years and, with SMU also joining alongside Cal and Stanford, it seems likely that will continue at least in the near future.

In 2025 and 2026, Stanford will play home-and-homes with Hawaii and San Jose State.

In 2027, it is scheduled to play at TCU and host Vanderbilt.

In addition to the Fresno State game in 2028, Stanford will also host San Jose State.

The Bulldogs went 10-4 last season under Jeff Tedford, and they’re off to a 5-1 start in 2023. Kalen DeBoer (now at Washington) led a 10-3 campaign in 2021 as well.
