Oregon State entered Saturday night’s matchup with Fresno State 0-6 all-time against the Bulldogs in Fresno.

When Fresno State’s Jake Haener connected with Erik Brooks for a 4-yard touchdown with just 1:05 to play in the game, it looked like 0-7 was a real possibility.

But then Fresno missed the extra point and the Beavers had life, trailing by just three. Quarterback Chance Nolan would need to only drive the team into field goal range for a chance to force overtime.

Well, Nolan got the Beavers into position, but coach Jonathan Smith didn’t want to play for overtime. He wanted to win it in regulation, so Oregon State called on its ace — Jack Colletto — to hammer home a 2-yard touchdown as the clock expired to win it 35-32.

Nolan took over at the Oregon State 27-yard-line with just 58 seconds on the clock. A first-down miss was quickly followed up by an 11-yard completion to Tre’Shaun Harrison and the Beavers were officially on the move.

Nolan hit Harrison again for 7 yards up the middle, but a second-down holding penalty set up a second-and-13. No problem. Nolan found Jesiah Irish for 23 yards to move the chains again. Then he hit tight end Luke Musgrave for 28 yards to get the Beavs down to the Fresno State 14.

A pass interference penalty on second down moved the Beavers down to the 2 with three seconds left and presented Smith with a choice — kick the field goal and play for overtime or roll the dice on one play? Smith sent his offense out, then called a timeout and decided to send back out the kicking team. A Fresno timeout right before the snap gave him another chance to think about it, so he changed his mind and sent the offense back onto the field.

This time, Jack Colletto lined up as the quarterback and the Beavers ran power off the right side. Fresno was helpless to stop the Beavers and Colletto ran over a would-be tackler to give Oregon State the win.

It was a two-point game going into a fourth quarter that featured a combined 21 points. Oregon State was outgained in a big way — 492-397 — but the Beavers, led by Nolan, made plays when they needed to. The Oregon State quarterback threw for 219 yards and a touchdown.

Tailback Deshaun Fenwick had 19 carries for 102 yards and a score. Musgrave had 80 yards on five receptions while Harrison finished with 53 yards and a score on five catches.

Harrison’s touchdown came with just under two minutes to go — a catch and run that took him from the right side of the field all the way back to the left, evading several would-be tacklers in the process. The score and subsequent two-point conversion put Oregon State up 29-26 with 1:50 to play.

Fresno State scored quickly to retake the lead, but in the end it was the Beavers with the final say.

Oregon State opens the year 2-0 with the win. It’s the first 2-0 start to the season for the Beavers since 2014. They’ll head to Providence Park in Portland next weekend for a game against Montana State at 5 p.m. PT.
