Oregon scrimmaged on Saturday. The defense had a strong day attacking the football. The offense had a lackluster day protecting the football.

Head coach Dan Lanning met with reporters after to talk about the day, and he revealed the offense threw four interceptions and fumbled the ball a handful of times.

Still, Lanning seems encouraged by the work getting done as the season approaches.

“Good day of practice. You know, second scrimmage, really our last scrimmage going into Game 1. I thought our guys had great energy, a really good approach,” Lanning began. “We did not do as good a job taking care of the ball today. You know offense moved the ball really well early and really kind of throughout the scrimmage but we had a lot of self-inflicted wounds and takeaways. Defense did a really good job of attacking the ball.

“That being said we get down in the red area, offense scores really quick twice. So, we’ve got to do a better job with red area defense and, overall again, pleased with the day. A lot of things still to correct but we got a lot of guys that love football and that’s fun.”

Asked if the turnover issues were more self-inflected on the part of the offense or forced by the defense, Lanning said it was a bit of both.

“It’s a combination of both not catching it clean, turns into a tip ball, turns into an interception,” he said. “Some poor decision-making, some taking advantage of an opportune moment and doing a good job attacking the ball. So these combinations, we got to do a better job taking care of it.”
