The first thing Oregon head coach Dan Lanning did when he sat down at the dais for his Monday press conference was address an anti-Mormon chant that took place Saturday when the Ducks hosted BYU at Autzen Stadium.

Footage surfaced shortly after the game showing a section of the crowd inside Autzen Stadium chanting “f— the Mormons.” The video led to outrage from Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who denounced the chant on Twitter as “religious bigotry.” It prompted statements from Oregon Gov. Kate Brown as well as the University of Oregon.

Lanning used his time Monday, before taking questions or talking about the Ducks’ opponent this week — Washington State — to say that he spoke with BYU coach Kalani Sitake and Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens spoke with BYU’s AD to apologize for what happened.

“I was really frustrated and disgusted to hear the things that were said during the game,” Lanning said. “I got the opportunity to reach out to (BYU coach) Kalani (Sitake). I know our athletic director, Rob (Mullens), got to reach out to Tom, their AD there at BYU and express our frustration and also apologize for the behavior of a few that really puts a cloud over a great group and a really fun situation for our players and our fans on Saturday.

“There’s no room for that in our stadium, and anybody who’s going to partake in that doesn’t need to be in our stadium. So, that’s been addressed.

The official Twitter account for Oregon’s student section — the Oregon Pit Crew — tweeted a statement after the game denouncing the actions of a few, saying it was “ashamed” of those who participated in the chant.

“To all BYU football fans in attendance at today’s game, we would like to apologize for the actions of the students in attendance,” the Oregon Pit Crew, the school’s student section Twitter account, tweeted. “We do not condone or support any hateful speech directed towards one’s religion and are ashamed of those who participated.”

BYU also released its own statement on Monday: “We appreciate the sincere apology from the University of Oregon regarding the behavior of some fans at Autzen Stadium on Saturday. We recognize that this isolated behavior does not reflect the values of the University of Oregon. As we all work together to address incidents that seek to divide us, we are grateful for those who are willing to come together to build bridges of understanding.”

BYU is a private university in Utah sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Nearly all of the more than 30,000 students at BYU are Mormons.
