We’ve got ourselves a game this weekend.

The 25th-ranked Oregon Ducks host the 12th-ranked BYU Cougars on Saturday in front of what should be a raucous Autzen Stadium crowd and a national TV audience (FOX, 12:35 p.m. PT). The Cougars are wanting to follow up last week’s overtime victory over Baylor with another top-25 win and solidify themselves as a team to be reckoned with in the College Football Playoff discussion. Dan Lanning and the Ducks want to prove they’re better than what we’ve seen the last few times they’ve taken the field against a ranked foe.

As of publication, the Ducks are a 3.5-point favorite in the game at FanDuel and have a 54.3% chance to win, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.

One model we really like is Bill Connelly’s SP+, a predictive system based on a number of college football’s most important influencing statistics. Connelly’s model has the Ducks winning a classic.

SP+ sees a 28-27 win for Oregon. For all the betting folks out there, that result would see the Cougars cover and the under hit (FanDuel has the total set at 58.5). For Lanning, that would be a welcome result.

“This team’s a really talented team that we’re about to go play,” the Oregon head coach said of BYU on Monday. “The more I watch their film, the more respect I have for them and the job they do. They play the game with a certain level of physicality and violence. That’s fun to see on film, and I know it’s going to be a fun game for our players.”

The Ducks won last weekend against Eastern Washington 70-14. We’ll see if they can carry that momentum over. A one-point win over a top-15 team would certainly be a huge boost for Lanning early in his tenure, something that would provide proof of concept to a team that’s, in some ways, still meshing and inject a little confidence ahead of the start of conference play.
