In an absolutely bonkers 44-41 come-from-behind win for the Oregon Ducks Saturday against Washington State, head coach Dan Lanning saw exactly what he wanted to see from his team at halftime.

The Ducks trailed 17-9 at the break. A drive into the Washington State red zone that might have given Oregon the lead with under five minutes to play in the second quarter instead ended with a 95-yard pick-six to put the Cougars further ahead. In a hostile environment and facing some major adversity, Lanning said he saw nothing but resolve from his group.

“Our locker room never wavered,” he said. “They were composed and ready to finish, the entire game. I think we knew that a lot of the issues that we were facing were self-inflicted wounds.”

Oregon scored 29 points in the fourth quarter.

Twenty-nine.

With 6:34 to play in the game, Washington State held a 34-22 lead. Five minutes and 33 seconds later, Oregon was up 44-34. Quarterback Bo Nix led touchdown drives on both of the Ducks’ final two possessions. With Washington State looking to drive for a possible game-tying field goal or game-winning touchdown, Mase Funa sniped a pass out of the air from Cameron Ward and returned it 27 yards for a touchdown.

Oregon averaged 8.4 yards per play in the second half and held Washington State to 5.6. The defense came away with two takeaways at game-changing times and produced three sacks.

The Ducks moved to 3-1 with the win, and that was a hard-earned third win.
