Greg McElroy is tackling a number of spring previews at key programs across the country. Recently, he addressed Arizona State entering the 2023 season with a new head coach.

After 4 seasons as a Power 5 OC with stops at Auburn, Florida State and Oregon, Kenny Dillingham steps in to lead his alma mater Sun Devils. McElroy is intrigued by the hire for a number of reasons, particularly with Arizona State pivoting in a totally new direction after firing Herm Edwards.

“Kenny Dillingham could not be more opposite of Herm Edwards,” said McElroy. “You’ve got older, guy that’s been around (in Edwards), go all the way to making Kenny Dillingham the youngest coach in all of college football. These guys could not be more different.”

As for what to expect out of Dillingham, McElroy is unsure about the defense but he knows the Sun Devils will produce excitement on offense. There’s also the hope that Dillingham’s offense can help former Notre Dame QB Drew Pyne find his rhythm.

“Either way, Kenny Dillingham got the job because he’s going to produce a lot of excitement offensively. Let’s be honest… I can tell you this, their offense is going to be exciting,” McElroy explained. “They’re going to run some tempo, they’re going to spread the field both vertically and horizontally. and hopefully — the newcomer Drew Pyne from Notre Dame — he’ll feel very comfortable within the offense… He’s going to play in a QB-friendly offense that might accelerate his ability.”

McElroy did address the idea of Jaden Rashada, the star recruit in the 2023 recruiting class, competing for the starting job right away. While McElroy expects Rashada to get a real look, he also foresees Pyne starting as the QB for the Sun Devils this season as Rashada works to develop and get stronger.
