Arizona State’s offensive rebuild under first-year head coach is well underway, and it’s going to feature a heavy influence from the transfer portal.

On Saturday, the Sun Devils pulled their second running back from the portal. Former Sacramento State back and 2022 FCS All-American Cameron Skattebo announced his commitment to ASU. He’ll have three years to play two at ASU.

Skattebo is a 5-foot-10, 212-pound back out of Rio Linda, California. He arrived at Sacramento State after a prolific high school career yielded just one Division 1 scholarship offer — from the Hornets. So Sacramento State got what Rio Linda HS got.

He ran for 6,192 career rushing yards and 69 touchdowns throughout his high school career. As a junior, he was named The Sacramento Bee’s Player of the Year after rushing for 3,550 yards and 42 touchdowns for a team that won a CIF 5A state championship.

The 2020 season, his first for Sacramento State, was canceled because of COVID. As a freshman in 2021, Skattebo ran for 520 yards and six scores on 57 carries. That earned him a spot on the Big Sky’s all-conference third team.

In 2022, he ran wild. Skattebo earned the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year award and was named to the FCS All-America Third Team after running for 1,373 yards and seven scores. He added another 371 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 31 receptions. Skattebo finished seventh among FCS players in rushing while averaging 7 yards a carry.

He also returned an onside kick attempt 43 yards for a touchdown and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass this season as a sophomore.

Arizona State went to the transfer portal last year for a lead tailback and found Xazavian Valladay. In his lone season with the program, Valladay led the Pac-12 in rushing scores (16) and finished second in yardage (1,192). Skattebo looks like a player with the potential to be the same kind of plug-and-play stud.

He’ll join a room also set to add former Cal running back DeCarlos Brooks. The Sun Devils should also return George Hart III and Tevin White. Skattebo is the 11th transfer player to announce their commitment to ASU.
