Arizona State was one of the final teams into the NCAA Tournament field, but the Sun Devils immediately proved they belonged.

The Sun Devils used a 17-0 run in the first half to blow their game against Nevada wide open, held what was at one point a 30-point second half lead, and cruised to a 98-73 win over the Wolf Pack. The win sets up a first-round matchup with No. 6 seed TCU on Friday.

Eight seconds into the game, Nevada took a 3-0 lead.

Desmond Cambridge Jr. and DJ Horne scored five quick points to put ASU on top and Nevada never saw another lead the rest of the way. ASU was up 13-3, then 29-20, then 51-22.

All told, it was a 22-2 run for ASU as everyone chipped in. Six players scored during the run.

And that was the theme of the game for ASU — everyone contributed.

Horne finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 4-of-5 from 3. Cambridge scored 17 points to go with six assists and a block. His brother, Devan, added 15 points — nine of which came in the first half as ASU made its run to take over the game.

Jamiya Neal added 16 points off the bench, also recording three steals. Luther Muhammed scored 12. Warren Washington pitched in nine.

It was Arizona State’s best offensive performance of the season. The Sun Devils shot 64% from the field, their best-shooting night in a game since Feb. 2, 2013. ASU also hit 11 of its 21 triples, its third-best performance from beyond the arc this season.

In fact, ASU’s 98 points were the most in a First Four game since the implementation of the play-in games in 2011.

Coach Bobby Hurley couldn’t have asked for a better start for his team. At a time when confidence can really change things for teams and create “come from nowhere” stories, the kind of performance Arizona State put on display Wednesday night should have the Sun Devils soaring with confidence.

They’ll look to keep it rolling against TCU (21-12) on Friday, with tip-off on truTV set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
