Arizona State has hired Marcus Arroyo as the program’s next offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

The school announced the move on Monday, bringing Arroyo back to the Pac-12 after three seasons as the head coach at UNLV. Arroyo has five years experience as a Power Five offensive coordinator and 11 overall at the collegiate level. He also served as an interim offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014.

Prior to taking the UNLV job, Arroyo coached quarterbacks and coordinated the offense for Oregon from 2017-19. His three seasons in Eugene aligned with the final three seasons for Justin Herbert — the future first-round NFL Draft pick and Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Each year Arroyo had a hand in the offense, Oregon finished inside the nation’s top 25 for scoring.

He coached running backs at Oklahoma State from 2015-16.

Before that, he coached in the NFL. Arroyo originally went to Tampa Bay to coach quarterbacks, but after a health procedure sidelined then-OC Jeff Tedford, Arroyo filled the role and helped Tampa Bay’s offense to produce the first season in franchise history with multiple 1,000-yard receivers.

Arroyo also has previous stints at Southern Miss, Cal, Wyoming, San Jose State, and Prairie View A&M. He brings two decades of coaching experience and has worked with every position group on the offensive outside of the offensive line.

Arizona also announced on Sunday that it has hired former Michigan State assistant Diron Reynolds as the program’s defensive line coach. Vince Amey is expected to remain on staff and transition into an analyst role in order to spend more time with his family.

Before his lone season at Michigan State, Reynolds spent seven seasons coaching the defensive line for David Shaw at Stanford.
