Arizona State has worst-attended season in over 50 years
Arizona State’s 2022 football campaign opened with a good bit of concern over the future, featured weekly frustration, and could come to an end this weekend with the first nine-loss record in program history.
The attendance numbers at Sun Devil Stadium for the year certainly reflect all that. Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman shared numbers this week that paint a dire picture for athletic director Ray Anderson. According to Karpman, ASU had its worst-attended season since 1968. The average attendance for Arizona State’s six home games was 43,081.
This year, ASU had its worst attended football season since 1968 with an average announced attendance of 43,081. Basically, the worst attendance since SDS capacity expanded in the late 60s.
Bottom 5 (1970-present)
2022: 43,081
2002: 45,837
1970: 46,305
1992: 46,496
1994: 46,802— Chris Karpman (@ChrisKarpman) November 21, 2022
The slate this year featured some marquee opponents, too. ASU welcomed four ranked Pac-12 teams to Sun Devil Stadium — Utah, Washington, UCLA, and Oregon State. ASU lost three of those games and went 2-4 overall at home, the first losing record at home since the 2009 season.
With an average attendance of just over 43,000, Arizona State had its worst attendance since Sun Devil Stadium expanded from 30,000 to 50,000 seats in the 60s.
The Sun Devils are looking for the program’s next head coach. Herm Edwards went into the year with a hot seat beneath him, and he lasted only three weeks before the program announced it was parting ways with him. That certainly plays a role. Regardless of why, the program’s next leading man will look to light a fire under the fanbase.
Arizona State ends its season on Friday (noon PT, FS1) against Arizona for the Territorial Cup.
