Coming off one of the biggest wins in over a decade for the program earlier this week, Stanford found itself down as many as 11 in the second-half in Pullman Thursday.

The Washington State Cougars shot 52% from the field in the first half, hit five triples, forced eight Stanford turnovers, and held freshman phenom Harrison Ingram well under wraps. Washington State looked to be in the driver’s seat. And after a Michael Flowers 3 with a little over 17 minutes to play in the game, it had a double-digit lead.

Then it went 14 minutes without making a shot from the field.

And Stanford embarked on a 21-0 run to flip the game on its head. Washington State never recovered and the Cardinal went on to win it 62-57 to move to 10-4 on the season. Washington State dropped to 9-7.

The Cougars missed 19 of their final 24 shots in the game, including an 0-for-15 stretch that saw Stanford surge from down 11 to up 14.

Spencer Jones and Brandon Angel powered things for Stanford during the run, and a lot of the damage was done on the interior. Six of the 10 buckets during the 21-0 spurt came at the rim. One more was a jumper from the paint. The rest were beyond the 3-point line. Jones scored seven of his 16 points during that run and Angel got nine of his 16.

Both forwards shot 6-for-11 from the field, helping to power the Cardinal to a second half that saw them shoot 57% from the floor. Jaiden Delaire pitched in 14 points of his own and rendered an off-night from Ingram pretty toothless. Thursday night was only the fifth time in his first 14 games that Ingram had scored fewer than 10 points.

Washington State didn’t help itself any, giving up the lane too easily and turning it over 11 times. They were also woeful from the free throw line. Even in spite of the 14:21 stretch where they didn’t hit a shot from the floor, they lost by five and missed six of their 10 free throw attempts.

Stanford can breathe a sigh of relief and turn its focus to Washington. It’ll play the Huskies on the road on Saturday (tip-off at 3 p.m. PT) before a four-day break leads up to another top-10 opponent in Arizona on Jan. 20. The Cardinal have won four straight and six of their last seven.

On the other side, the Cougars have lost five of their last seven. They’ve opened conference play 2-3. They’ll play Cal on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
