Washington State will honor the late Mike Leach Saturday during its LA Bowl game against Fresno State.

The Cougars are wearing white helmets for the game, complete with an “ML” sticker on the back of the helmet. The program’s Twitter account shared a photo of the helmets ahead of the game with the caption “Forever a Coug.”

Mike Leach passed away on Monday at the age of 61 following complications from a heart condition. The Pirate had been the head coach at Mississippi State for the last three seasons and, prior to that, coached Washington State from 2012-19.

“He allowed Coug fans to be confident we could win. He came to Pullman and Washington State to really not just revive himself but to revive a program,” current Wazzu coach Jake Dickert said earlier this week. “I always talk about impact vs. influence. Because you’re the head coach, you have a lot of influence, but he’s impacted many people’s lives. Not just Cougs. There’s so many former players, to hear his stories … they love Coach Leach. I think he’s made a lasting impact locally in Pullman but also nationally in college football. His footprints will be in football for a long time.

“We’re excited to honor Coach on Saturday. We’ll have a helmet sticker for him and hopefully everyone will understand there’s a gravity to the moment and we lost a great ambassador for the game.”

Leach led the Cougars to six bowl games in his eight seasons and a program-record 11 wins in 2018.

The Cougars take on Fresno State Saturday in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl at 12:30 p.m. PT on ABC.
