Klay Thompson wants ‘illustrious’ Washington State to remain in Power Five
Klay Thompson on Thursday was asked about the pending demise of the Pac-12 as the conference is on the brink of extinction after the latest wave of realignment. All but 2 programs — Oregon State and Thompson’s alma mater of Washington State — will depart in 2024.
“I have no idea what’s in store for the future,” he said, adding that he is “in constant communication” with university president Pat Chun. “I just try to be the best supporting alumni I can … I would like to see them stay in the Power 5 because we have an illustrious history of great athletes to come out of Wazzu, and I think we’re deserving of that title, but at the same time, we’ve got to do what’s best for the university.”
Thompson, a standout at Washington State before being taken 11th overall by the Golden State Warriors in 2011, talked about how playing in the conference was a “dream” of his while being raised on the West Coast.
He evoked athletes such as Jackie Robinson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who starred in the conference before their professional careers.
“It’s pretty disheartening seeing the ‘Pac’ break up,” Thompson said. “The amount of great athletes that have come out of that conference is just insane when you think about it … it’s pretty sad to see it dissolve.”
