Maybe it’s time to buy some stock in Jaylen Jenkins.

The true freshman running back for Washington State had quite the day Saturday during the Cougs’ scrimmage. The Spokesman-Review’s Colton Clark reported that Jenkins went for 126 yards and a touchdown on just nine carriers in the scrimmage.

After the scrimmage, head coach Jake Dickert was asked about Jenkins and had nothing but positives to say.

“He’s fearless,” Dickert said. “There’s no situation we’ve put him in so far and he hasn’t handled mentally and physically and passed every test that we’ve had for him. This scrimmage was very detailed, it was just running out and making plays. He was one guy we talked (about) as a staff, we wanted to make sure we had a clear picture of what Jaylen is capable of doing and I think you saw plenty of big plays from him.

“Explosive runs are game-changers and I think that is what he brings to our offense. That allows the defense to come up and we can hit some things over the top. I thought he had an excellent scrimmage and I’m looking forward to him building off a little bit of success.”

The 5-foot-8, 177-pound Jenkins arrived this summer and has quickly put himself in a position to see the field as a true freshman.

He’s competing with Nakia Watson and fellow 2022 signee Djouvensky Schlenbaker for snaps in the Cougar backfield this upcoming season. While the Cougs are running it back with Eric Morris’ modified version of the Air Raid, Washington State is still expecting to have the running back as a featured part of the offense.
