Washington’s home-and-home series with Ohio State has been canceled.

The Buckeyes informed UW they do not plan on playing the game, according to a release from the Husky program sent out on Wednesday. Ohio State still plans to abide by the terms of the game contract and pay any liquidated damages.

That’s expected to be a minimum cancellation fee of $500,000 to get out of the agreed-upon series.

“We initiated the cancellation,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said in a statement. “I have the utmost respect for the University of Washington and for Director of Athletics Jennifer Cohen, and this was a very difficult call to make.

“Consistent with terms of the contract, we will be responsible for the $500,000 cancellation penalty that has to be paid by February 2025. As a result of the cancellation, we will add an eighth home game for the 2024 season, affording us the opportunity to have the funding to pay the penalty and guarantee for that eighth opponent.”

Ohio State was scheduled to visit Husky Stadium on Sept. 14, 2024. Washington would have made the return trip the following season on Sept. 13, 2025.

“We are very disappointed that our student-athletes, staff, and Husky Nation won’t get to experience these two games with Ohio State,” said UW athletic director Jen Cohen in a release. “Everyone has had these dates circled for a number of years and we were looking forward to these opportunities to compete against the Buckeyes. We are in the process of finding new opponents for the 2024 and 2025 seasons and will provide an update as soon as we have one.”

It’s a fairly irregular move on the part of the Buckeyes to cancel a non-conference series this close to the first game — let alone a series that includes major programs like these two.

The 2024 season will mark the first in which the Big Ten includes USC and UCLA. The Big Ten is expected to change up its league schedule once the two L.A. schools join the fold.

Ohio State hosts Southern Miss and Western Michigan at home in the non-conference that season. Perhaps the Buckeyes are anticipating a heavyweight Big Ten slate.

Washington is slated to host Weber State and Eastern Michigan in the non-conference portion of the 2024 schedule. Colorado State and UC Davis are on the schedule for the following season.
