Washington scores in all three phases as Huskies explode for 45-point first half
Washington might be the hottest team in the country right now, and if you thought the start of Pac-12 play would slow things down, think again.
UW dropped a 45-point half on Cal at Husky Stadium Saturday night and took a 45-12 lead into the break. The eighth-ranked Huskies had six drives; only four of them ended with touchdowns. It wasn’t just the offense that was rolling, though. UW was dominant in every phase in the first half.
Edefuan Ulofoshio opened the scoring with a 45-yard pick-six off of Cal quarterback Ben Finley. Then Rome Odunze had an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown. Then quarterback Michael Penix Jr. started letting bombs off the chain.
Penix finished the first half 12-for-17 passing for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Ja’Lynn Polk had two scores and 66 yards on five catches. Odunze had a touchdown and 112 yards on four catches.
The Huskies averaged 10 yards a play and held Cal to just 5 a play. UW picked off Finley three times and held the Bears to just 65 rushing yards. Washington ran just 30 first-half plays and still managed to top 300 yards.
UW has been dominant through the first three weeks, but this was something different. This was surgical precision.
