Washington wide receiver Giles Jackson is dealing with a thumb injury that could put his 2023 season in jeopardy.

UW offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb revealed to local reporters on Wednesday that Jackson recently injured his thumb, per The Seattle Times’ Mike Vorel. While the severity of the injury is still to be determined, Jackson could opt to use his redshirt and save the year.

The 5-foot-9 senior is in his fifth year and his third with the Huskies. He spent the first two seasons of his career at Michigan — where he played right away.

Jackson played in all 12 games of the 2021 season for UW and then started five times while appearing in 13 total games last fall, so that redshirt is still available for Jackson to use if he wants to save the year and possibly play a sixth season of college ball.

UW has a deep and talented crop of receivers heading into the new season. Rome Odunze, Jalen McMillan, and Ja’Lynn Polk figure to dominate the snaps and targets — just as they did a season ago.

That trio combined for 296 of the 374 receiver targets in 2022. The Huskies also have a talented newcomer in Germie Bernard, who is expected to have a role right away. Redshirt freshman Denzel Boston has also made waves this offseason and appears to be in line for an expanded role.

Still, the potential loss of Jackson would be something UW will need to adjust for. He was effective in his role last season, bringing in 28 of his 32 targets for 328 yards and a score. Jackson was also able to split out wide and slide into the slot. He brought in three contested catches and went through the entire year without a drop.
