Fourth-year Washington offensive lineman Nate Kalepo is set to start at left guard this season.

It’s a new role for the Rainier Beach native, who has been a reserve in the offensive line room for the last two seasons. But Kalepo crushed the offseason conditioning program and impressed the new coaching staff enough to lock down the starting job ahead of the opener against Kent State.

Kalepo cut 30 pounds of bad weight throughout the offseason. The 2021 roster lists him at 330 pounds. The updated roster for the new season has him at 316. Maybe more impressively, he added 100 pounds to his squat max during the cut.

A big reason why: he cut out McDonald’s.

Offensive linemen eat a lot. Most college football fans know this. We get stories every year about the crazy meals the big “hog mollies” up front eat in order to keep weight on.

The 6-foot-6 Kalepo redshirted in 2019, appeared in two games in 2020, then played in 11 of 12 games last season but most of that was special teams. On Saturday, he’ll make his first career start. Washington kicks off against Kent State at 7:30 p.m. PT on FS1.
