Washington OC Ryan Grubb knows expectations are high for the program and star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. this fall. Grubb is also taking a bit of extra caution to keep Penix in shape for the season.

On Wednesday, Penix was held out of scrimmage sessions for a third straight day per Mike Vorel with the Seattle Times. Fortunately, Penix was dressed and at practice and did take part in throwing drills.

After practice, Grubb said the team is simply being careful with Penix’s workload after the QB developed some soreness:

“Mike did a great job the first couple days, and we’re just being careful,” Grubb assured Wednesday per Vorel. “He got a little bit sore, so we’re just being cautious. He threw yesterday. He threw today. So he’s doing great.”

Grubb downplayed the soreness being an area of concern moving forward. According to the OC, Penix is “just making sure he feels 1,000%. Even if he’s 99%, you’ve got to take care of the big guy.”

Considering the grind of the college football season, it’s understandable to get Penix a bit of rest in training camp. As a veteran starter, Penix also does not need as many reps as other players on the roster.

During the 2022 season, Penix finished 8th in voting for the Heisman Trophy after throwing for 4,641 yards and 31 touchdowns. As long as he stays healthy, another big season could be in store as the Huskies make a run for the Pac-12 Championship.
