Washington is class of Pac-12 in Joel Klatt's preseason Top 25
Washington is the highest-ranked team from the Pac-12 in Joel Klatt’s preseason Top 25.
With the college football season fast approaching, preseason Top 25s are dropping everywhere. The official Saturday Football ranking debuted on Monday. The preseason AP Top 25 will release next week. And Klatt, the former Colorado quarterback and FOX analyst, has now shared his.
He has Washington at No. 6.
“Washington is sneaky good,” Klatt said. “I think Washington could win the Pac-12. I think that Michael Penix, their quarterback, could win the Heisman. That’s my darkhorse right there.”
Klatt also has USC at No. 8, Utah at No. 11, Oregon at No. 13, Oregon State at No. 15, and UCLA at No. 25. It’s shaping up to be an exciting football season on the West Coast; the back-to-back defending champs are running it back with quarterback Cameron Rising but the quality of depth around Utah looks to be really strong in 2023.
Washington didn’t make the league title game last season — missing out due to tiebreakers after finishing 7-2 in conference play — and everyone who could return did in order to settle what they felt like was unfinished business. That included Penix, the Huskies quarterback who became a star in his reunion tour with coach Kalen DeBoer, as well as wideouts Rome Odunze and Jalen McMillan.
“Their wide receiver corps is second in the country to Ohio State,” Klatt said. “Odunze is fantastic.”
And Klatt says UW has a “pretty darn good” defense.
Here’s Klatt’s full Top 25 reveal (with his Washington comments beginning at the 13:42 mark):
