Washington added to its backfield on Wednesday with a potential instant-impact running back out of the transfer portal.

The Huskies announced the signing of former Arizona State running back Daniyel Ngata in a signing day stunner. A former 4-star running back who signed with the Sun Devils in the 2020 class, Ngata arrives on Montlake with three years to play two.

As a blue-chip prospect out of Folsom (Calif.) High, Ngata turned down offers from all over the country — including Washington — to sign with ASU. According to the 247 Composite, he ranked as the 125th overall prospect in his class. In Tempe, Ngata played in all four of ASU’s games in 2020, then appeared in 11 games each of the last two seasons.

He ended his Sun Devil career with 136 carries for 689 yards and six touchdowns.

In each of the last two seasons, Ngata had 56 and 54 carries as a backup running back. He was slightly more productive in 2021 — rushing for 309 yards and four scores — than in 2022, but will give coach Kalen DeBoer both an experienced and promising runner to add to the fold for 2023.

A 5-foot-10, 200-pound runner, Ngata joins 19 high school signees as newcomers to UW. The freshman class also includes 3-star Bakersfield running back Tybo Rogers.
