New Washington coaching staff using 2021 Apple Cup as fuel
The last images of Washington’s 2021 football season were unbearable for Husky fans. Washington State celebrated a 40-13 Apple Cup win in the middle of Husky Stadium and planted a crimson flag at midfield.
It’s Apple Cup Week in Seattle, and the Huskies’ minds aren’t far from last year’s debacle. The new coaching staff won’t let them forget. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb told reporters on Monday that a still of Washington State fans on the field after the game last year was the closing slide during the team’s offensive meeting on Sunday.
Ryan Grubb says a still of WSU fans partying on the Husky Stadium turf was the closing slide of their offensive meeting on Sunday.

Coach Kalen DeBoer added to that when he took the dais shortly after Grubb on Monday.
“It’s definitely a motivating factor. It’s something the guys haven’t forgotten,” DeBoer said. “I think it has to be more than that because that will wear off. It has to be about the things and what we stand for and how important it is to be our best and the things we’ve discussed since day one when we got here. But it certainly is a part of this game, and the guys haven’t forgotten that.”
UW and this new coaching staff get their shot at payback on Saturday (7:30 p.m. PT, ESPN) at Gesa Field in Pullman. Washington will be going for win No. 10 on the year.
