Kalen DeBoer updates workload of QB Michael Penix Jr. during camp
Kalen DeBoer and Michael Penix Jr. teamed up for a dramatic 2022 season leading Washington, and the two are running it back with hopes for an even better 2023 performance.
As the Huskies continue on throughout camp, Washington OC Ryan Grubb mentioned earlier in the week that the team was “being careful” with Penix. Grubb indicated Penix “got a little bit sore” after the start of camp to explain Penix not participating in a string of scrimmage sessions, but the OC also noted he did not have any long-term concerns.
DeBoer echoed a similar sentiment on Saturday. The head coach said Penix took the majority of the first team snaps Saturday in the team’s first full scrimmage of the preseason.
DeBoer also said QB Michael Penix Jr. took the vast majority of starting reps in today’s scrimmage, UW’s first scrimmage of preseason camp.

While it does not look like there were ever any serious concerns with Penix, one can certainly understand a team being cautious with a valuable player early in training camp. Penix was a big key to the team’s success a season ago and figures to be the same in 2023.
