Kalen DeBoer made his case for Michael Penix Jr. to win the Heisman Trophy on Sunday.

Voters for the award have until Monday to submit their ballots. Penix is expected to be one of the finalists alongside Oregon’s Bo Nix and LSU’s Jayden Daniels. DeBoer’s case for Penix is that he’s done what the other guys haven’t.

“I think just first of all, he’s 13-0. He’s won every game,” the Husky head coach said. “You have the guy that doesn’t just put up all these crazy stats, but a guy that leads your football team.”

Penix’s numbers simply can’t compare to that of Daniels if the voters’ sole focus is the box score.

Daniels has been LSU’s everything this season, but he’s had to be. LSU is 9-3. The defense is 80th nationally in scoring. He has 3,812 passing yards and 40 touchdowns to go with 1,134 rushing yards and 10 more scores.

But the Tigers lost their season opener to Florida State on a neutral field. They lost at Ole Miss on Sept. 30, and they lost at Alabama on Nov. 4.

Penix leads the nation in passing, with 4,218 yards and 33 touchdowns.

His Huskies are 13-0. They are Pac-12 Champions. And they’ll participate in the College Football Playoff.

“The greatest moments are when the greatest players have to rise and step up. He did it again the other night,” DeBoer said referencing Washington’s 34-31 win over Oregon in the title game.

Oregon briefly took a lead late in the third quarter. Washington scored 14 unanswered in the fourth to secure a win.

“Go back to the Oregon game the first time, wins the football game with a throw. Finding ways to lead us against Washington State in the Apple Cup,” DeBoer said. “There are those big moments where you do that and win those games and go 13-0 because you have the trigger man.”

Penix threw the game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes to play in the first meeting with Oregon. In the Apple Cup, he made the correct read on a fourth-and-1 option play that moved the chains and set up a walk-off field goal.

DeBoer praised the leadership piece of Penix’s game as well.

“The statistics are one thing. The wins are another. The leadership. He’s just a class act through and through,” DeBoer said. “It’s first and foremost all about this team. … Right now, I can tell you first and foremost what he’s about is our team winning this next football game in hopes of getting on to a national championship.”

Finalists will be announced on Monday. The Heisman Trophy ceremony takes place on Saturday, Dec. 9.
