Kalen DeBoer and the Washington Huskies were pushed to the absolute limit Saturday night in a 15-7 win over Arizona State.

The Huskies won a regular-season game without scoring an offensive touchdown for the first time since 2001. DeBoer said after the game this type of performance will only serve to make the team stronger.

“I’m confident our offense will get back on track and get out there and do their thing again,” DeBoer said. “We can be down, but we can also look at it and be understanding that we’ve got a gritty team that doesn’t give up and (has) a mindset that refuses to lose.”

Washington was held scoreless in the first quarter for the first time this season, and it was held without a touchdown in the first half for the first time since Oct. 22, 2022.

The Huskies managed only 288 yards of total offense in the game — the lowest output of the DeBoer era.

“I thought they did a nice job mixing up the pressures and getting to Mike (Penix Jr.),” DeBoer said. “If they didn’t get to Mike they at least had a hand in the way. … Hats off to them for keeping us off balance, we’ll expect to see more of that certainly in the weeks ahead.

“It’s nothing we can’t handle schematically, personnel-wise, it’s just a matter of regrouping and looking at it and getting back to the details and getting it right.”

DeBoer said he could hear leaders on the team pushing the right buttons at halftime before he even addressed the team. He thought the response was strong. Penix tipped his hat to Arizona State but also said UW didn’t play to its potential.

“I feel like they had a good game plan but, to be honest, we saw most of the stuff they showed today,” Penix said. “We saw it on film, it was just a matter of us executing in the right moments and making those plays when we had the opportunity today. We gotta make sure we go in the film room and clean that up.”
