Greg McElroy is rolling with Washington this weekend in the top-10 battle between the Huskies and Oregon. However, that was far from the most eye-opening comment he made during a recent segment on “Always College Football.”

As a part of his breakdown for Saturday’s game, McElroy admitted that the numbers are pointing in favor of Dan Lanning’s squad. In the end, McElroy doesn’t think it will matter against Washington.

The ESPN analyst went on to compare this year’s Washington squad to the 2019 LSU team that would win the national title. That title-winning team was led by eventual Heisman winner Joe Burrow and a host of NFL-caliber receivers.

“All the trends are pointing to Oregon in this one. All the stats, all the metrics, everything is on the side of the Ducks,” said McElroy. “But, here’s the problem. This Washington team feels a little bit like 2019 LSU right now where there are going to be great teams statistically superior and maybe more well-rounded — like Alabama was in 2019, like Clemson was in the national championship in 2019 — but it didn’t matter.

“Michael Penix Jr. is that good and this receiving corps is that good. I’m taking Washington to win the game. I think they get it done at home.”

Just as a reminder, the 2019 LSU squad was led by Burrow who threw for over 5,600 yards with 60 touchdowns while completing 76% of his passes. The Tigers led the country while averaging 48.4 points per game and famously dropped 63 points in a College Football Playoff win over Oklahoma while rolling to the title.

As for the Huskies, Penix is currently completing 74.7% of his passes and has 16 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions as the team is averaging 46 points per game. The host of talent at receiver also gives the Huskies a matchup nightmare for any defense to contend with.

If Washington can get past Oregon, it is possible a special season is within grasp, but Saturday’s game is not going to be an easy one.
