Rece Davis had a fun little nugget on ESPN’s College GameDay when the topic of Washington football came up.

Only 13 active FBS head football coaches have won a national championship — at any level. First-year Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer is one of them.

The former Fresno State head coach and Indiana offensive coordinator cut his teeth in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There, he won just about every game he coached in and claimed three NAIA national championships.

The DeBoer era on Montlake begins Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. PT when the Huskies kick off against Kent State. And the GameDay crew thinks Washington won’t just win, but it’ll cover a major point spread in DeBoer’s first game.

Chris “The Bear” Fallica picked Washington to cover as a 22.5-point favorite.

“Last year was a debacle — everything that went on with Jimmy Lake off the field, offensively Dylan Morris turning the ball over all over the place,” he said. “They’ve still got players on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, DeBoer brings in Michael Penix, who he was with at Indiana. This team can’t help but be better this year.”

Asked if he thinks DeBoer can ultimately get UW competing for championships, Fallica said, “In that league, why not?”

The Huskies went 3-8 against the spread last season.
