Colorado coach says Washington's playing like a top-five team in the country
Back-to-back road losses sort of poured cold water all over what was happening inside Husky Stadium. At least from a national perspective.
Washington was the hottest team in the country when it jumped out to a 4-0 start. But then the Huskies lost to UCLA at the Rose Bowl and Arizona State at Sun Devil Stadium and the collective attention turned away from Seattle.
Well, it returned en masse over the weekend when UW rallied to knock off then-No. 6 Oregon on the road.
Deservedly so, says interim Colorado coach Mike Sanford.
“Today, this might be the best team in the conference. They’re as good as any team right now maybe in the top five, top 10 of college football,” Sanford said, according to BuffZone’s Brian Howell. “We’ve played really good football teams. This is a really, really good football team.”
The Buffaloes (1-9, 1-6 Pac-12) certainly have their hands full this weekend. UW just shredded Oregon’s secondary, to the tune of 408 passing yards.
As a team, the Huskies put up 522 yards of offense and another 37 points. Quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is on pace to snatch the program’s record for passing yards in a season. The last time a UW team scored at the clip this group is, Washington went to the College Football Playoff.
It has been a roaring success in Kalen DeBoer’s first season on Montlake.
Could another strong offensive showing be in store Saturday against the Buffs? Seems likely. CU is giving up the eighth-most yards per pass attempt of any team in college football this season (8.6). They don’t take the football away either. Penix could be in for another field day.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network.
