Boo Corrigan shares thoughts on flaws in Washington's résumé, reasons for No. 5 ranking
Boo Corrigan addressed the debate between Washington and Florida State for the No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night.
The Noles once again edged out Washington for that coveted spot in the top 4. In a teleconference after the rankings were revealed, Corrigan was asked if Washington’s defensive struggles were the main reason it still finds itself behind FSU.
Corrigan, the CFP selection committee chair, acknowledged Washington’s issues on defense, but also pointed to a pair of bad performances vs. lackluster opponents.
“I think when you look at [Washington’s defense], that is a factor in what’s going on as well as Arizona State and Stanford, close games there with two teams that have won a combined six games this year,” Corrigan said on the conference call. “But we’re going to continue to look at it and continue to evaluate week over week.
“You saw today a little bit when you look at the whole 25, it’s a clean sheet every week as we come in and we continue to debate it.”
Washington defeated Stanford 42-33 and Arizona State 15-7 in October. Most recently, Washington beat Utah 35-28 at home in Week 11.
Washington does have a very tough schedule the rest of the way, so perhaps the Huskies could pass FSU in the final weeks of the 2023 regular season. The Huskies will play No. 11 Oregon State this weekend. They’ll also potentially have a meeting with No. 6 Oregon in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
Florida State will not face another ranked team until a potential meeting with No. 10 Louisville in the ACC Championship Game.
Washington and Oregon State will kick off at 4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday night.
