Utah will be without three top defenders in Week 12 contest with Arizona
Utah will be seriously shorthanded on the defensive side of the football against Arizona.
Defensive end Jonah Elliss, linebacker Karene Reid, and safety Cole Bishop will all miss Saturday’s game against the 17th-ranked Wildcats. According to KSL’s Josh Furlong, none are dressed out with the team as it makes its way through pregame warmups. Other reports from the field suggest safety Sione Vaki will be limited.
Elliss is a Lombardi Award finalist and one of the nation’s leaders in sacks this season. He has 12 in 10 games for the Utes. Reid and Bishop set the defense behind Ellis. They have a combined 107 tackles, seven tackles for loss, eight pass breakups, and three interceptions.
Reid, Bishop, Vaki, and Elliss are all among Utah’s top five tacklers this season. The defense is already missing linebacker Lander Barton and defensive end Logan Fano, two regular starters who were lost for the season earlier this year.
The injury misfortune in Salt Lake City has been rather unbelievable. Coach Kyle Whittingham said earlier this week that it has made this season the most difficult of his coaching career.
Arizona has won four straight games — three of which came against teams that were ranked at the time of the matchup. The Wildcats are looking to keep their hopes of making the Pac-12 Championship Game alive.
Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network.
