Utah and Arizona State enter conference play in significantly different places.

The 13th-ranked Utes (2-1) are coming off two blowout victories. They stomped Southern Utah two weeks ago, 73-7. Then they followed that up by exacting revenge on San Diego State with a 35-7 win last week. The run defense has improved each week. Quarterback Cameron Rising hasn’t tossed an interception since the Florida game as his receiving corps has started to emerge. Plenty to feel good about for Utah as it remains a team people expect to compete for the Pac-12 title.

Arizona State (1-2) is on the other side of things, coming off an embarrassing loss to Eastern Michigan at home that resulted in the program parting ways with head coach Herm Edwards. Running backs coach Shaun Aguano was promoted to the interim head coaching spot, and ASU spent the entire week trying to keep things together.

Expert predictions

ESPN’s FPI gives Utah an 83.4% chance to beat the Sun Devils.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ is calling for a 32-21 Utah win.

SunDevilSource’s Chris Karpman is picking a 35-16 Utah win.

Athlon Sports’ John Coon has the Utes winning 31-13:

A coaching change after three games could galvanize Arizona State. More likely, it will send the Sun Devils into a tailspin — at least for this season. Too many Pac-12 teams have taken a step forward from a year ago. Utah is as dangerous as ever. The Utes have a troubling knack for starting slow on offense, but that shouldn’t matter enough to make a difference against an offensively-challenged Sun Devils squad. Utah will have few problems extending its winning streak in the budding rivalry series to three games on Saturday.

CFN’s Pete Fiutak has Utah winning 34-15:

Utah isn’t going to get cute. Cameron Rising and the passing game might be playing well, but the offense is going to power away behind its terrific offensive line, it’ll control the clock, and it’ll grind its way to the win. Arizona State will come out with a good effort, and it’ll give it a good push, but it won’t be able to hold up against the Ute lines.
