Utah’s battle for backup quarterback has been settled. Bryson Barnes, a walk-on from Milford who nearly led the Utes to a stunning Rose Bowl victory last January, will serve as Cameron Rising’s primary backup in Saturday’s season-opener against the Gators.

The program released its first depth chart of the new season on Monday, and all eyes went to the QB2 spot. Barnes had been battling with Ja’Quinden Jackson in camp for the backup job. Jackson played in three games for the Utes last season but didn’t attempt a pass.

The Salt Lake Tribune’s Josh Newman shared the depth chart on Twitter.

Other notes from the depth chart — which should always be taken with a grain of salt:

  • Money Parks had as strong a camp as anyone, drawing praise from all over. He starts out as the No. 2 at the X spot behind Devaughn Vele.
  • The running back position is going… four-deep this season? The Utes rolled with a three-headed monster last year in the backfield. The two-deep has four running backs listed, all with the OR designation by their names. Tavion Thomas, a year after recording 21 rushing scores, is the top guy, but the depth chart also lists Chris Curry and freshman Jaylon Glover behind Thomas and Micah Bernard.
  • Bernard is also listed as the team’s kick returner. Vele will handle punt returns.
  • True freshman linebacker Lander Barton gets the starting spot at STUD linebacker.
  • Notably absent is Stanford transfer edge rusher Gabe Reid.

The seventh-ranked Utes battle Florida in Gainesville on Saturday, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. PT on ESPN.
