Utah opened fall camp on Monday. And the spotlight is firmly on a handful of offensive playmakers who are making their way back from extensive injuries.

Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig told reporters on Monday that quarterback Cam Rising is not yet a full go, but the expectation is he will be so at some point during camp. Ludwig also said tight end Brant Kuithe is in the same boat while running back Chris Curry has been cleared to return, per Utah insider Josh Newman.

According to KSL’s Josh Furlong, Rising will be an “active participant” in camp but the first week will be about seeing where he’s at in his rehab.

Rising has led the Utes to back-to-back Pac-12 titles, but an ACL injury in the Rose Bowl put him into recovery mode over the offseason. The Utes have maintained throughout that they’re optimistic he’ll be ready to go by the opener against Florida on Aug. 31.

Kuithe was limited to four games last season before being knocked out of the lineup. The three-time All-Pac-12 selection should have a huge role in the offense in 2023.

Curry played in just three games before being sidelined. He had six carries for 60 yards and a score against Southern Utah, a game that really highlighted what he could bring to the backfield. Ludwig said they’ll be careful with Curry so as not to “wear him out.”

Utah topped 3,000 rushing yards as a team last fall and produced a school-record 38 touchdowns. Sixty-nine percent of that production is back for 2023, with Curry joining alongside Ja’Quinden Jackson, Micah Bernard, and Jaylon Glover.

Defensive lineman Van Fillinger and safety Nate Ritchie are also cleared to return.
