Utah coaches said before spring ball ended they would take a long, hard look at the transfer portal market for some help at wide receiver. Both head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig would like a bit more depth at the position.

And they’ll need it now even more than before. The spring period concluded on Saturday with the 22 Forever Game, and on Monday a pair of receivers entered the portal.

Senior Ti’Quan Gilmore and redshirt freshman Chris Reed both announced on Monday they were entering the portal.

(Reed didn’t technically “announce” the news, but he retweeted several accounts sharing that he’d entered the portal.)

“Unfortunately my time here was short and I would like to thank my family and friends that supported me on this long journey,” Gilmore said in a message shared on Twitter. “I am excited to move on to the next chapter of my football career.”

Gilmore played in four games as a wide receiver and on special teams last fall. The 5-foot-11 wideout was the No. 7 JUCO receiver in the 2022 class after spending three years at College of the Canyons, where he was a CCCFCA All-America selection.

He finished his lone season with the Utes with two rushing attempts, three punt returns, and no receptions.

Reed was a 3-star recruit from Apopka, Florida, who signed with the program out of the 2022 class. The 6-foot, 193-pound wideout was credited with three appearances as a freshman but didn’t record any stats.

Utah returns last year’s leading receiver at the position — Devaughn Vele. Vele’s production was solid (55 catches, 695 yards) but not of the game-breaking variety. Money Parks and freshman Mikey Williams had productive spring periods and will look to make an impact in the fall, but Utah needs more from the group.

Given the comments made and now the attrition sustained, it seems like a near certainty that Utah will take some swings at receivers in the portal going forward.
