Utah announces season-ending injury to key defender following win over USC
Utah linebacker Lander Barton is done for the season.
Following the Utes’ 34-32 win over USC on Saturday night, coach Kyle Whittingham revealed the starting linebacker suffered a season-ending injury in the win. Barton left the game with a team-leading nine tackles and was spotted on the sideline afterward with crutches and a boot on his right foot.
A 6-foot-4 sophomore from Cottonwood Heights, Barton had started each of Utah’s first seven games this season. He entered Saturday’s contest with 25 tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions, and a forced fumble.
He becomes the sixth player so far this season to suffer a season-ending injury, joining running backs Micah Bernard and Chris Curry, tight end Thomas Yassmin, wide receiver Mycah Pittman, and defensive end Logan Fano.
The Utes (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) are still alive in their quest for a Pac-12 three-peat. They’ll host the Oregon Ducks next Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. PT on FOX.
